Why banks make this hard
Bank lending systems are built around employees: payslips in, approval out. Self-employed income is lumpy, seasonal and often deliberately minimised on paper for tax. Feed that into a bank checklist and you get declined or lowballed, even when the business is doing well.
Specialist and non-bank lenders take a different approach. Some read your business bank statements to see real cash flow. Some accept BAS or an accountant's letter. Some offer genuine low doc options where an income declaration does the job. The catch is that every lender has its own formula, and picking the wrong one costs you time and a credit enquiry.
Ways to prove your income without payslips
- Bank statements: lenders read 3 to 12 months of business banking to see real turnover
- BAS statements: quarterly lodgements as evidence of income
- Accountant's letter: a declaration from your accountant confirming income
- Low doc declaration: for established ABNs, a signed income declaration can be enough
- Tax returns: if yours are up to date, they open the full doc panel too
Which path fits depends on your ABN age, GST registration, credit history and the car itself. That is a matching problem, and matching is what we do all day.
Business use? Consider a chattel mortgage
If the car is mostly for work, a chattel mortgage can make more sense than a consumer loan. The business owns the vehicle from day one, repayments and depreciation may have tax advantages, and GST registered buyers can often claim the GST on the purchase price. Talk to your accountant about what suits your structure, then we will find the lender to match.
FAQs
Can I get a car loan with no payslips at all?
Yes. Lenders on our panel accept bank statements, BAS, an accountant's letter or a low doc income declaration instead of payslips. Which options are open to you depends on your ABN age and overall profile.
How long do I need to have been self-employed?
More options open up once your ABN is two years old, but some lenders will consider people self-employed for 12 months or less, particularly with a deposit or good credit history. We will tell you where you stand before anything is lodged.
Will shopping around hurt my credit score?
Applying directly to multiple lenders adds an enquiry each time, which can drag your score down. Going through a broker means one conversation first, then a single application to the lender most likely to approve you.
Should I buy the car in my business name or personal name?
It depends on how much the car is used for business and your tax structure. A chattel mortgage in the business name suits mostly-business use, while a consumer loan may suit mostly-personal use. Your accountant is the right person for the tax call, and we arrange finance either way.
How quickly can it all happen?
With documents ready, approvals often land within 24 to 48 hours. If you are buying from a dealer we can usually have everything settled so you collect the car within days.
